Matt Lutz

Founder

Matt Lutz, principal at Flatwater Homes LLC, lives in Milwaukee's North Shore with his wife and two daughters.  Matt has over 35 years of hands-on construction experience delivering complex projects from high-end residential homes to cross country pipelines, offshore oil rigs and super yachts. He earned a Bachelor's of Science from Colorado State and an MBA from The University of Chicago. Matt also competed for eight years on the United States Canoe & Kayak team, representing the United States in three World Championships and numerous World Cup races.

Matt comes from a long family history in the construction industry.  His father, who was a professor at the University of Wyoming Industrial Arts program, taught Matt how to build at a young age. His grandfather was a plumber and his great grandfather an architect.  When Matt turned 15, he became a form setter for his uncle's foundation company, working through high school and into college.  After graduating college, Matt worked for the premier high-end construction firm, Schultz Miller, in Seattle while racing kayaks.  This is where he honed his trade skills and drive for perfection in delivering some of the most complex custom homes in North America.

Following his athletic career, Matt returned to graduate school which gave him the opportunity to work at the FMI Corporation, a management consultancy and investment bank focused solely on the construction industry.  He then moved into offshore construction with McDermott International working mostly on global corporate development initiatives.  Matt eventually landed at Bechtel where he held several roles in corporate and project settings including building cross country pipelines and project procurement for a LNG facility.  Living internationally, building mega projects and driving complex construction teams provided the discipline and process foundation that is the backbone of Flatwater Homes.

WHY THE NAME FLATWATER HOMES?

The name Flatwater comes from Matt’s years of training and racing whitewater kayaks.  He would ultimately log countless hours paddling on flatwater.  It was discipline, process and attention to detail that created the calm and tranquil conditions critical to crafting a winning athletic program.  The feeling of smooth, effortless, tranquil flatwater was the inspiration for Flatwater Homes and what is delivered to all their clients.
